Steeped in tradition, the Hotel Monte Rosa was the first hotel in the village. Opened in 1839 by the local doctor, it was at that time the only village inn and boasted three rooms. The Hotel was taken over by the Seiler family in 1853. Its guests include Edward Whymper, the first conqueror of the Matterhorn, and numerous other mountaineers. Over the years the hotel has been extended and refurbished on several occasions and it was recently upgraded to meet the demanding standards currently expected of an international hotel, yet without losing the homely ambiance and charm of a traditional turn-of-the-century alpine hotel.
