Summer Ski Area Closes Early due to Too Much Snow

Italy's Passo Stelvio has closed a week earlier than planned after the heavy snow and other extreme weather conditions that have killed at least nine people in the country and flooded Venice.
Passo Stelvio's ski slopes have an unusual season, opening early May when snow is closed from the road pass, one of Italy's highest, as the Giro d'Italia cycle race comes through. It then stays open to late October or early November ands had planned to close at the end of the day on Sunday, 4th November.
A major ski festival had been planned to close the season over the coming weekend.
A lot of glacier summer ski areas have struggled with too little snow cover this spring to autumn due to warm temperatures, with some closing temporarily because of it, but none have closed due to too much snow.
The centre's management say that more than 1.5m (five feet) of snow has now fallen there since Saturday.
