50th World Cup Win For 23 Year Old Mikaela Shiffrin

50th World Cup Win For 23 Year Old Mikaela Shiffrin

Published : 22-Dec-2018 04:34

The remarkable Mikaela Shiffrin took her 50th World Cup win today in the slalom at Courchevel.

It was the 35th slalom win for Shiffrin who only recently became one of only seven racers in history to win races in all five Alpine disciplines.

And she's still only 23.

Shiffrin's latest victory comes the day after Marcel Hirscher became the most successful ever Austrian racer with his 63rd World Cup win in the slalom race at Saalbach. The win also put him in third place in the 'all-time winners' list behind Lindsey Vonn (82 wins) and Ingemar Stenmark (86 wins).

Although Vonn (34) has said she is in her final year of competitive racing, she, Hirscher (29) and Schiffrin could all overtake Stenmark's record. He retired from international racing 30 years ago next March, having established won his 86th gold in February 1989, although he will be taking part in an all-stars charity ski competition at the Alpine World Championships at Are in Sweden in February.

Shiffrin won by 29 hundredths over second placed Petra Vlhova from Slovakia who came second for the fourth time this season, each time behind Mikaela Shiffrin. Swedish skier Frida Hansdotter was third and back on Courchevel's podium after her second place in 2013.

It was Shiffrin's 4th victory at Courchevel, overtaking Marlies Schild with whom she is now equal on overall slalom wins who had three victories on the Emile-Allais stadium's slopes.
