Wingsuit daredevil swoops down Val d’Isère’s legendary Face de Bellevarde

Published : 26-Jan-2021 03:55

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's skydiver Fred Fugen soaring in his wingsuit above the famous Face black run in Val d'Isere.

Fugen, from nearby Annecy, is a leading member of the Red Bull-sponsored 'Soul Flyers' team. Even if this had been a normal season, Fugen was always planning to fly the 2830m Face de Bellevarde this winter with his team mate, Vince Reffet.

The original idea was to put on a show for the skiers below making their way down this challenging slope. The pair carried out a detailed recce in Val d'Isère in July 2020 and were ready to go this winter, but tragically in November, Reffet was killed in a training accident in Dubai.

Earlier this month, in January 2021, Fugen took the decision to go it alone as a tribute to his partner, even with the lifts closed due to the global pandemic.

Born out of tragedy, it was a flight of hope for wintersports in Val d'Isère and across the world.
