Freddy Carrick-Smith wins GB’s first ever Alpine EYOF Gold

Published : 13-Feb-2025 08:23

17-year-old British slalom racer Freddy Carrick-Smith delivered a stunning performance at the opening Alpine race of the 2025 European Youth Olympic Festival earlier this week taking Gold in the Boys' Giant Slalom.

Carrick-Smith's gold was the first ever EYOF Alpine medal for a British skier, following on from Freddy's twin brother Zak's achievements in winning Britain's first medals at an Olympic Alpine event in Gangwon at the Youth Olympic Winter Games last year.

Freddy Carrick-Smith recorded the fastest second run to claim top spot, ahead of Norway's Storm Andre Hagen, and clear of Ziggy Vrdoljak of Croatia in third.

Freddy's twin brother Zak Carrick-Smith finished in fifth place, just over half a second off the podium.

Bronze for Sandra Caune

It was Team GB's first medal of the Bakuriani Games and was quickly followed by a bronze in the ski slopestyle from 16-year-old Sandra Caune.

Sitting in sixth spot after the first run, Caune's second run score of 80.00 put her comfortably into third place just 2.5 points shy of Denmark's Silje Kinkead in second. Gold was won by Simona Revjagin of Estonia with a second run 86.00.

Twenty British athletes are taking part in the European Youth Olympic Festival.
