Tignes Le Lac sits beside its namesake lake at 2100m, forming the lively core of the Tignes resort. It offers direct access to the Grande Motte glacier and the vast Espace Killy ski area shared with Val d'Isère.

Tignes Le Lac is the central and most animated of Tignes' villages, built around a lake that freezes over in winter and hosts events on its surface. Its purpose-built architecture is functional rather than charming, but its position makes it hard to beat for ski access.

Tignes Le Lac is part of the Tignes ski area with access to 150km of downhill skiing, with 154 marked pistes, served by a total of 87 ski lifts. From Tignes Le Lac you can ski to the other villages of Tignes Les Boisses, Tignes Les Brévières and Tignes Val Claret.

The ski resort itself is at 2,100m, so skiing or boarding back to the resort is usually possible. With ski lifts as high as 3,450m, skiing and snowboarding is assured throughout the season.

Tignes Le Lac benefits from its high base altitude of 2100m and access to the Grande Motte glacier at 3456m, giving some of the most snow-sure skiing in the Alps. The glacier allows skiing on snow well into autumn and again from early winter, while natural snowfall through the season generally keeps lower pistes in good condition. Ski Area Stats

Skiing

Tignes Le Lac gives direct access to the Espace Killy, a linked ski area shared with Val d'Isère totalling around 300km of pistes. Skiing runs from the Grande Motte glacier at 3456m down to the valley floor. The Grande Motte cable car and the Perce-Neige and Fresh gondolas lift skiers from Le Lac towards the glacier, where summer and autumn skiing is possible. Pistes such as the Sache, a long red/black run dropping over 2000m in vertical to Les Boisses, are popular with strong skiers, while the Palafour and Aiguille Percée sectors offer varied blue and red cruising. The Toviere gondola links Le Lac towards Val Claret and onward into the Val d'Isère sector via the Col de Fresse and Solaise. Higher up, the Grande Motte's north-facing glacier terrain retains snow well into the season, and the Double M and Aiguille Rouge chairs serve steeper, more technical terrain above 2500m. Beginners have access to gentle nursery slopes right by the lake, while intermediates will find much of the Espace Killy accessible from Le Lac's lift network.

Snowboarding

Tignes has long been a snowboarding stronghold, and Le Lac sits close to the Snowpark Tignes on the Val Claret side, one of the longest-running parks in the Alps with jumps, rails and a boardercross. The glacier area also hosts summer boarding camps. Wide, open pistes around Le Lac suit freestyle-minded riders, while the varied terrain across Espace Killy offers plenty of off-piste and natural hits for freeriders.

How to get there

 By Air

The nearest airport to Tignes Le Lac is Chambery, 113 minutes drive away.

Annecy, Turin Caselle, Grenoble, Geneva, Lyon St-Exupéry and Lyon Bron airports are all within three hours drive.

The nearest major airport is Chambéry, around 2 hours by road, with Geneva and Lyon airports both roughly 2.5 to 3 hours away and served by regular winter transfer buses. By car, Tignes is reached via the A43 and then the N90 through Bourg-Saint-Maurice, with the final approach climbing to Le Lac at 2100m. The TGV also runs to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, from where transfer buses connect to Tignes.

Le Lac has a solid après scene, with Loop Bar and The Blue Girl Café popular for early-evening drinks, and Harri's Bar a long-standing fixture for a livelier crowd. La Grande Ourse and Barbecue offer more relaxed dining, while later on, TC's Bar and the Melting Pot draw skiers and boarders into the night. Lakeside bars fill up on sunny afternoons when the terraces open.
