August Snow Forecast For The Alps
August Snow Forecast For The Alps
Published : 23-Aug-2018 09:38
Snow is expected to fall above 2000 metres in most of The Alps this coming weekend – the last in August and meteorological summer.
In terms of ski areas currently open for summer skiing, currently forecasts suggest up to 30cm of snow could fall at Hintertux and nearly 20cm at the Molltal glacier, both in Austria.
Around 5cm of fresh snow will fall on Saturday on Switzerland's two currently open ski areas – Saas Fee (pictured above with their new cheery 'summer ski ambassador') and Zermatt with temperatures on the glaciers dropping to 3-4 degrees below zero Celcius.
In Italy, Passo Stelvio may see up to 10cm, with Cervinia likely to get the same as Zermatt.
Down at resort level temperatures will stay closer to 10C. Sunday looks like it will be even colder on the glacier – down to -8C but currently no further snowfall is forecast.
It's not unusual for snow to fall at altitude in the Alps in August but the none-the-less, and despite the fact that temperatures are set to rise again next week, snowfall at this time of year tends to raise excitement levels for the coming season.
In France les 2 Alpes, the only summer glacier ski area still open for 2018, ends its summer season on Sunday and should see some fresh snow for that - although only a centimetre or so is expected.
September sees around half a dozen glacier areas in Austria and Italy planning to start their 2018-19 seasons, joining the half-dozen already open.
