Some Snowfall High in the Alps
Some Snowfall High in the Alps
Published : 22-Aug-2026 07:19
There has been a light covering of snow high up in the Alps over the past 24 hours.
Although it's not a lot, the fresh snowfall has at least raised hopes of a change in the weather after months of predominantly warm weather to high altitudes with all snow cover melting from most Alpine glaciers, temporarily shutting down all summer skiing operations.
Snowfall was reported, mostly above 3,000m, at a number of areas including les 2 Alpes in France and Passo Stelvio in Italy as well as Plateau Rosa above Cervinia, pictured above yesterday.
This kind of summer snowfall at altitude is not unusual most years and probably not enough to close the current temporary closure decisions of summer skiing slopes at Saas-Fee, Zermatt and Passo Stelvio, but is at least a step in the right direction.
Forecasts suggest more snowfall at altitude is expected over the week ahead.
