First Rider On Australian Snow For 2026

A second pre-season snowstorm in Australia has led to the first snowboarder being pictured taking to the (thin) snow cover for some early turns.

Snow started falling on the southerly Australian island of Tasmania, home to two small ski areas, late on Friday and by Sunday cover was significant enough for at least one boarder to take a ride. The picture above was taken at Mt Mawson on Sunday.

70+ Ski Areas Plan To Stay Open Into May

More than 70 ski areas in more than 15 countries plan to keep offering lift-served skiing into May this year. The centres are spread across three continents – Asia, Europe and North America.

About half of the areas are in the Alps where Austria has y=the most to choose from - about a dozen centres open into May, half of them glaciers, half snowsure high-altitude resorts.

J2Ski Snow Report - April 9th 2026

It's been warm, but the snow's hanging on in Ischgl, Austria.

Whilst western North America received up to 60 cm/24 inches of snow, most ski areas have closed or are closing this weekend as spring conditions dominate across most of the northern hemisphere. Parts of Scandinavia continue to offer the strongest late-season conditions with fresh snow and cold temperatures.

New record set for Haute Route from Chamonix-Zermatt

[b]Trail and ski mountaineering athletes Hillary Gerardi and Valentine Fabre have set a new women's speed record on the legendary Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt, completing the crossing in just 22 hours, 35 minutes and 20 seconds.

The pair linked Chamonix in France to Zermatt in Switzerland in a single, continuous push - an achievement that typically takes regular ski tourers five to seven days.

New ski game ‘Nice to Ski You’ launched

A new ski game has hit the market with the launch of the 'Nice To Ski You' pocket-sized card game.

The 'Top Trumps' style game was created by graphic designer Peter Erlach and blends "alpine storytelling, design and travel inspiration into a single collectible format".

La Plagne (Doesn't) Go(es) Kamicaze

La Plagne was set for a burst of spring mayhem as the resort's much‑loved Kamicaze soapbox race was set to return on Easter Monday 6 April 2026. But we now see this event has been cancelled

Open to both participants and onlookers, the annual event, described by the resort as "a firm fixture in the spring ski calendar", invites teams to hurtle down the snow in homemade contraptions that prioritise creativity as much as speed.

Great Conditions in the Scottish Highlands For Easter Week

Cairngorm ski area above Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands is reporting some of the best Easter snow conditions in several years as the centre also celebrates one of the most consistent ski seasons in decades, having now operated for nearly five-months straight, other than closures due to strong winds or access roads closed by snowfall. About a dozen runs representing about half the full area, are currently open with fresh snowfall over the past few days.

Flaine, France: fresh snow and open until 19th April

Alps back into full winter as April begins, with many resorts recording well over 1 m/3 ft of new snow and significant avalanche risk across central and western zones. Elsewhere, Scandinavia, Scotland, Eastern Europe and the Pyrenees saw fresh snow, Canada got regular top-ups, while many western US resorts closed early amid warm conditions.

Most Northern Hemisphere ski resorts will close in April, with at least average to great conditions this year.

Where to Ski in April 2026

April is when most northern-hemisphere ski areas finish their seasons, most by mid-month, though several hundred make it into the latter half and a chunk continue into May. This year looks above average in the Alps after one of the season's snowiest weeks to end March, OK in Scandinavia, fairly normal in much of eastern Europe and Japan, and most of Canada, with a few centres still open in Scotland.
