Review of Lofer, Austria

"Lofer, a little known resort to the Brits - or is"

reviewed by DGou *

Many will know Lofer as you skirt the village en route to larger more well known resorts. The lift system is efficient, including some easy runs for beginners. The magic carpet is a favourite with those wanting to improve on shorter runs before tackling longer blues. The lifts are great, modern and the operators are very friendly. The ski area spreads out at the top to many blue, red and some black runs. You can get the bus to Waidring to also access the Steinplatte for more variety. There are several mountain restaurants to choose from, with sunny decks and deckchairs. Stunning views too. You can also buy a pass just to come up for the day without skiing, or drive if you have a car. Once back down in the resort there is apres ski music and dancing at the Karussel bar and also the cafe at the ski hire shop. You can also toboggan down this lower run by these cafes and cause some amusement/chaos! There is a wide variety of accommodation from simple pensions to 4 star hotels like the lovely Hochmoos. A ski bus links around the village so you don't have to walk far, and of course lockers are available at the base station to store your equipment and boots. There are 3 good supermarkets, especially if you are self catering, plus other smaller shops for every day needs. There is also a weekly market. There aren't many gift/tat shops but you should find most things. There's also a bank, pharmacy and clothing shops. Cafe Dankl does excellent coffee and cakes.

One fact you may not know is that some of Where Eagles Dare was filmed in Lofer. There are info boards around the village.

So the British may not know about Lofer?? But the British Ski Team do, it is their winter base and athletes can often be seen practising on the slopes. There is even a sign pointing to their base.

Getting there is easy from Salzburg Airport, a 40 minute transfer by taxi or you can get the bus from outside the airport terminal, which will drop you off in the centre of the village by the Tourist Information (and public toilets!)

For days off the slopes, you can easily get to Zell Am See, St Johann, Waidring, Kitzbuhel by bus/train. Salzburg itself is also worth a visit, and the Sound of Music Tour (a fun day..honestly!) There are plenty of hikes to nearby villages, always with a cafe. There is also Basecamp Outdoor Activities Centre just outside Lofer.

We've been numerous times cos we love Lofer!!
