The ski area of Winterberg is little known outside the country but despite having a small vertical of less than 200m is one of the country’s most popular and operates the most modern lifts.

Part of the centre’s success is due to its location in the North West of the country, unlike most other famous German ski areas on the southern border in the Alps. Instead it is close to several major German cities, including Cologne, and the Dutch border, which sees up to 50,000 skiers and boarders arriving for evening and weekend skiing.

The resorts lifts were once largely separate drag lifts operating in multiple small villages making up the area, but increasingly these have been inter-connected and with hi-tec, hi-speed detachable chairlifts.

In fact the resort’s chairlifts, most of them detachable, including five six and eight seat detachable chairlifts, is the greatest collection of chairlifts and detachable chairlifts at any German resort.

The German ski resort of Winterberg is at an altitude of 700m, with 40km of marked runs.

Winterberg is part of the Wintersport Arena Sauerland ski area with access to 67km of downhill skiing, with 41 marked pistes, served by a total of 3 ski lifts. In addition to the skiing in Winterberg itself (40km of pisted ski runs), the appropriate ski Lift Pass will allow you to ski or snowboard in the other Wintersport Arena Sauerland ski resorts of Altastenberg, Postwiesen, Usseln, Willingen-Upland and Züschen.

The skiing is at relatively low altitude, so snow cover can be variable.

Winterberg offers good sking, particularly, for Intermediate and Beginner skiers.

Winterberg is highly rated by Snowboarders and there is a Snow Park in Winterberg.
