Winterberg
The ski area of Winterberg is little known outside the country but despite having a small vertical of less than 200m is one of the country’s most popular and operates the most modern lifts.
Part of the centre’s success is due to its location in the North West of the country, unlike most other famous German ski areas on the southern border in the Alps. Instead it is close to several major German cities, including Cologne, and the Dutch border, which sees up to 50,000 skiers and boarders arriving for evening and weekend skiing.
The resorts lifts were once largely separate drag lifts operating in multiple small villages making up the area, but increasingly these have been inter-connected and with hi-tec, hi-speed detachable chairlifts.
In fact the resort’s chairlifts, most of them detachable, including five six and eight seat detachable chairlifts, is the greatest collection of chairlifts and detachable chairlifts at any German resort.
