Altitude 2009 (Comedy Festival) Line Up Announced

The line up and schedule for the second Altitude Comedy Festival which kicks off in Meribel next week has now been announced.

The 2009 comedy line-up includes Marcus Brigstocke, Ed Byrne, Andrew Maxwell, Phil Nichol, Ardal O'Hanlon, Omid Djalili and the Comedy Store Players – all playing multiple gigs.

Annual Ski Lift Ticket Survey Reports On Global Price Trends

An annual study of lift ticket prices from more than 600 ski areas in 40 countries worldwide has provided some statistics to back up trends most skiers have been aware of throughout the season – lift ticket prices are much higher for Brits travelling abroad.

Sierra Nevada Extends Season 2 Weeks

...and Cuts Prices in Half...

Sierra Nevada will offer half price ski tickets after the Easter holidays and have announced that the season will last for an extra fortnight to at least mid-May because of all the snow.

The resort, Europe's most southerly, currently has four metres of snow on its slopes and 100km (63 miles) of piste open. The discounted lift pass will be available from April 20th to May 15th.

New Snowmaking Reservoir in Les Arcs

The Paradiski ski area in the French Alps which incorporates Les Arcs, Peisey-Vallandry and La Plagne – has further improved its artificial snow network meaning guaranteed snow for the latter half of the season.

The Adret de Tuffes at Les Arcs is a new, high-altitude reservoir in the Arc 2000 ski area, which feeds the artificial snow networks of both Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry. The reservoir offers a capacity of 400,000 cubic metres, the largest of its type in France, and optimises the flow of water required by the snow cannons. Ski lift operators have taken into account environmental aspects in this project.

Zermatt announces New Gondola for 2010

Zermatt's lift company have announced that they will open an extension of the Matterhorn-Express from Schwarzsee paradise over Furgg to Trockener Steg next winter.

The new cable car will offer guests more comfort with modern eight person cabins transferring guests directly from Zermatt to Trockener Steg making the time for the single trip up to Trockener steg only 25 minutes!

We were delighted to spot this on the website of the Ghana Ski Team this week...

After 4 years of heart ache, sweat and being away from his family, Ghana's Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong has finally qualified for the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010. Kwame and the Ghana Ski Team would wish to extend their heart felt thanks to all the sponsors and partners who have made this dream a reality. Kwame is also grateful to all his friends and family who supported him throughout his campaign, especially his wife (Sena) and kids (Ellice and Jason).

Selva Gardena Greenest Italian Community

The "Legambiente" organisation in Italy has determined that the Italian ski resort of Selva Gardena is the most environmentally friendly community in the country.

In the Italian weekly magazine “Panorama” the organisation notes that the sources of renewable energy in Italy are increasing and that Selva Gardena is in first place with an average of one square metre of solar panel coverage per habitant.

Andorra Tops European Average Lift Ticket Price League

An annual study of lift ticket prices charged by more than 500 ski areas in 35 countries worldwide has reported that prices for British guests are well up this season to most international ski destinations.

The findings are published as part of the World Lift Ticket Price Report 2009, the eighth annual edition of the Report by Scottish based independent research company Snow24. The Report compares the cost of a six-day, high-season, non-discounted ticket bought in resort in hundreds of resorts around the world including off-the-beaten-track ski destinations like Argentina, China, Iran and Romania.

Major US Ski Resort Goes Bust

Tamarack ski resort in Idaho has been declared bankrupt four years after the resort opened proclaiming itself the first new destination ski resort in the US a quarter century. The centre stopped operating lifts and accommodation yesterday (Wednesday 4 March) due to a combination of overdue loan repayments, limited credit, falling demand for property and unpaid bills. The resort had also made an operating loss of nearly three million dollars so far this season.

Big Snow In Western North America

Ski resorts along North America's West Coast from Mammoth to Whistler are reporting big snowfalls in the past week.

Mammoth Mountain in California was just hit by a massive winter storm that has been hammering the Eastern Sierra with snow since Sunday, March 1. The majority of the storm has passed, but not before the US National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the area. This generous snowfall has pushed Mammoth well over its yearly average of 400 inches (10 metres). The total stood at 418 inches on March 4th.

Pyrenean Glacier Ice Down 90%

A study by the Spanish Environment Ministry has found that the estimated 3,300 hectares of ice that covered the mountain range between Spain and France at the beginning of the 20th century have been reduced to 390 hectares over the past 100 years.

The study also found that the rate of melt has accelerated in recent years, with a quarter of the ice melting away in the past six years.

Trauma kills One Third of avalanche victims

A new study of avalanche deaths in western Canada reveals that trauma causes as many as a third of all fatalities, raising the need to rethink approaches to avalanche safety. Existing safety devices and rescue methods focus primarily on asphyxia and not on trauma, says study co-investigator Pascal Haegeli, a post-doctoral fellow in the School of Resource and Environmental Management.

Last weekend's mild "blip" faded quickly and snow has returned to many parts of The Alps over the past day or two - with significant snow reported across the North in particular (Northern French, Swiss and Austrian Alps).

Giant Easter Egg Hunt planned for Formigal

Formigal, in the Spanish Pyrenees is the perfect destination this Easter with free lift passes for all new reservations and more heavy snowfalls which started last night.

The latest dumps, which are predicted to last all week, come on top of weeks of snowfalls which have left the resort with depths of more than two metres.

SnOasis Construction to Start Late October

Construction of the UK's largest indoor snow centre, the GBP 300m SnOasis project in

Suffolk, will begin in late October with a tentative opening date of Spring 2013, Godfrey Spanner of owners Onslow Suffolk has told local media.

Two potential operators - one British and one German - are reported to be in the running for the right to run the main snow centre, which will be built first.
