20 Resorts Still Open As Heavy Snow Falls
Published : 17-May-2013 10:49
However chilly it has been in Britain of late, temperatures have been dropping back to nearly double digit sub-zero on Alpine glaciers, and heavy rain has been falling as heavy snow on ski slopes.
Unfortunately very few ski areas are currently open to give a lift up to anyone planning to pop out to enjoy the fresh mid-May powder. Not many ski areas publish snowfall data at this time of year, but Engelberg's Titlis glacier reports 15cm in the last 24 hours. It's due to close on Monday after a final weekend of skiing, but is currently stormbound. There's also fresh snow at Glacier 3000 near Gstaad which is open another week to the 26th and at year-round Zermatt.

Fans of James Bond, and of snow sports, will be pleased to hear a large new Bond exhibition is to open this summer at the Schilthorn - Piz Gloria, a revolving restaurant above Murren in the Swiss Jungfrau.
The restaurant is inextricably linked with the Bond story as it was the main location for the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service. At the time of filming the restaurant was incomplete and facing financial problems to complete construction, however after filming was completed on the Bond movie, the film company paid enough to allow the restaurant to be completed, and start revolving.

Last Weekend of French 2012-13 Ski Season
Published : 10-May-2013 01:21
Val Thorens - maybe not now quite so snowy as this, but still open
It's the last weekend of the ski season in France with the two 'still open' resorts, Tignes and Val Thorens, ending their seasons at the end of the day on Sunday.
There's been little or no fresh snow for over a week and temperatures have been reaching double digits above freezing at times, but the snow is still seven to nine feet deep or more on the glaciers (Tignes 275cm, Val Thorens 220cm ) so there's plenty to slide on. Snow is forecast for Val Thorens tomorrow.

New Option for Skiing Pakistan
Published : 06-May-2013 08:48
Pakistan will have a new destination for skiers next winter when a chairlift is installed at Naltar ski area, formerly a preserve of the Pakistan Airforce (PAF).
Pakistan's only commercial ski area open to the public, Malam Jabba, was opened in the late 1990s after around 10 years of on/off construction with a hotel and a chairlift donated by Austria but the Swat Valley where it is located was taken over by the Taliban in 2009 who destroyed the lift and other resort infrastructure.
