The big news of the week is that, at long last, significant snows have fallen across the French Alps.Widespread falls have improved conditions right across Europe, hitting The Alps, The Pyrenees and The Dolomites alike with accumulations exceeding half a metre in many resorts. France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany have all been reporting powder conditions at times.
Snow continued to fall in North America this week, with most areas adding to already impressive depths. Extraordinary amounts of snow (3 metres in seven days!) have been reported from Lake Tahoe and ski stations in Colorado.
European Weather and Snow This Coming Week
More snow is expected overnight tonight (Thursday), likely to be spreading into the Alps from the East. The Western Alps (French Alps and West Switzerland) are also in the firing line for more significant snowfall through Sunday. Local accumulations could be quite substantial.
The general outlook over the next few days is very variable and will likely see the occasional clear spell mixed in with further bands of light to moderate precipitation as the week progresses. Once again the forecast models are proving quite dynamic, and difficult to judge with confidence, but they are at least consistent in the unsettled weather they're predicting!
Temperatures are currently well below average in the Eastern Alps but are expected to rise over the next few days toward seasonal averages - precipitation may be lighter than elsewhere this week but local snows could still be quite heavy at times.
