Innsbruck To Be First Resort in History to Host Three Olympics

Once it was the capital; of the Tyrol, now it is naming itself the capital of the Alps, Innsbruck will host its third Olympics, the first ever Youth Olympic Winter Games from 13 to 22 January 2012.

The Olympic flame will once again burn brightly in Innsbruck's Bergisel ski jump stadium, thus marking a world record for being the first city to host Olympic Games (summer or winter) on three occasions. The resort is now preparing for this historic event.

K2 Summit Push starts for Ericsson

According to the latest entry on their blog at http://www.fredrikericsson.com/, the guys were planning to leave Base Camp today with a planned summit on Tuesday prior to the first ski descent of K2.

UK Skier Numbers Drop Below A Million - claim Crystal

The annual report on the state of the British ski holiday industry by the country's most popular tour operator, Crystal, has concluded that the ski market fell by 11% across all sectors last season, which on top of a decline of 13.3% the previous winter, meant the market has declined by nearly a quarter since winter 2007-8, and dipped below a million for the first time in a decade.

New Eight-Seater Chairlift For the SkiWelt

Austria's SkiWelt region which links the skiing of eight resorts in the country's largest ski region, and is itself linked to neighbouring kitzbuhel's ski region, has announced its new projects for winter 2010-11.

In Scheffau the new Osthangbahn will be a family friendly eight-seater chairlift with child-proof lock for added safety and heated seats.

Hollywood Blockbuster Filmed At Old Canadian Ski Resort

The new Hollywood movie Inception was shot at the currently closed Canadian resort of Fortress Mountain last autumn, raising hopes among locals that the popular ski centre might be able to reopen for snowsports on the back of a presumed cash injection from the film company.

New Cranmore Quad for 2010-2011 Ski Season

Cranmore ski area in New Hampshire is spending approximately $6 million on major improvements to the resort.

The South Peak double chair will be replaced with a Doppelmayr eco-Drive, energy-efficient, fixed-grip quad chairlift.

The existing South Peak double chair will be relocated near the Beginner Basin. Terrain in Beginner Basin will be altered to make room for the chair as well as provide additional beginner terrain.

Valle Nevado 2010 Snow Tally Passes 2 Metres

Valle Nevado in Chile has fully opened after fresh storms brought 2.1m (7 feet) of new snow to the centre, only 60km (37 miles) from the capital, Santiago.

This season the resort has renovated its five star Hotel Valle Nevado, following the renovations of its four star Hotel Puerta del Sol and three-star Hotel Tres Puntas in 2009.

New Chairlifts And Gondola Arise Around Gstaad

Work crews in the Gstaad ski area are currently constructing a new quad chairlift and a new gondola, as well as more snowmaking of course, in order to offer an improved experience to skiers and boarders next winter.

The new Rougemont - La Videmanette gondola and the Chalberhöni - Vorderes Eggli high-speed quad chairlift as well as various new snow-making machines should be ready for use by December.

Four New Lifts And New Snowmaking At Les Arcs

Les Arcs has announced it is spending around 9.1 million Euros this summer on upgrading its slopes and improving safety ahead of next winter.

Four new lifts are being installed including a short new chairlift "du Parchey" in Plan Peisey, Peisey-Vallandry. This will link a new building expected for completion in winter 2011/2012 and form an easier connection between the lifts and a new children's playground. It will be 302m long, rise 107 vertical metres and have a capacity of 1500 people per hour.

Huge Investment Sees Austria's Hochkonig Ski Region Fully Lift Linked

Austria's Hochkonig ski region will at last be fully inter-connected by ski lifts this winter following a two year investment of more than 30 million Euros on new lifts which include a new cable car and three new six seater chairlifts. There will also be top to bottom upgrading of snowmaking and many other aspects of the ski region.

Pejo’s Cable Car Reborn 25 Years On, Opening Up Huge Vertical

One of the most exciting projects in Europe this winter is the construction of a new cable car at Pejo in Italy, 25 years after the original lift ceased operating.

The new Pejo 3000 cable car dramatically increases by 600m (or 50%) back up to 1800m from the top of the new lift, at 3000m, down to the base of the slopes at 1200m. For the past two and a half decades the lifts have stopped at 2400m.
