Paradiski Opening Day - 19 December 2009

Paradiski is throwing a party on 19 December to mark the opening of its ski area. The theme of the event will be good cheer and exploration.

The official relaunch of the Vanoise Express lift on 19 December 2009 will mark the opening of the Paradiski area for the 2009-10 season. Paradiski opens its gates to all skiers wishing to explore Europe's most prestigious ski area.

Abondance Bounces Back from ‘Global Warming Closure’

It was "The start of the end of skiing in the Alps" two seasons ago when in the middle of one of Europe's worst ski seasons for snowfall the small French resort of Abondance announced it would not be running its lifts.

The Associated Press agency seized on the news and it appeared in newspapers all around the world as evidence that skiing in the Alps was coming to its end (eg: http://www.insidesocal.com/tomhoffarth/archives/2007/07/whatta-mean-the.html)

Kitzbühel Opens

The 2009-10 skiing season began in Kitzbühel on 24 October - earlier than ever before. The low temperatures combined with ultra-modern snow-making facilities and almost a metre of new snow mean that skiing is already possible in Kitzbühel ,two months before Christmas.

Snow Forecast Summary - 23rd October 2009

A decent amount of snow has arrived in The Alps over the last week, with lots of fresh reported across the higher Austrian resorts in particular. Conditions are now excellent at all the open glacier areas, and Kitzbuhel is planning to open this coming weekend. :D

SWISS Now Only Airline Offering Free Ski or Board Carriage

As unprecedented economic times have lead British Airways to axe its free ski and board allowance, Swiss International Air Lines claims it is now the only airline that will transport the first set of snowsport equipment free of charge on flights this winter, in addition to complimentary checked luggage on flights between the UK and the Alps.

Private Funicular Opens For Luxury Swiss Ski Hotel

A remarkable new lift for the exclusive use of those fortunate enough to be staying in the Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa, enters full time service this winter.

The Tschuggen Express, the futuristic mountain railway belonging to the hotel, is about to begin its first full winter season allowing guests to be up on the slopes in just 2½ minutes – unique in the Alps.

North American Ski Season Start Is Earliest for 40 Years

Loveland Ski Area in Colorado was the first ski area in North America to open for the 2009-2010 ski season when Chair 1 started turning at 9am on Wednesday, October 7th. The resort, one of the world's highest ski areas, had started making snow on September 21, 2009.
