Southern Hemisphere 2009 Ski Season Starts Today

Sunny skies, bubbles and smiles all round were the hallmarks of the opening of the ski season at Mt Hutt in New Zealand today (Saturday, May 30).

More than 2000 Cantabrians and visitors to the region turned out to welcome the snow and celebrate skiing in May at Mt Hutt.

Burton NZ Open Heads Back To Cardrona

The Burton NZ Snowboard Open (NZO) have announced that ater three years of tremendous competition at Snow Park NZ, contest will step back across the valley to Cardrona, where it all began.

With Cardrona having invested heavily in new facilities over the past couple of years and with 22-foot pipes now being the 'standard' globally for high level events, this is a strategic move for the organisers of the Burton NZ Open.

North American Ski Resorts report mixed results

As more results are posted on the results of the 800+ ski areas across North America, a clear trend is emerging.

Overall the US National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) report business down a little more than 5% on last season. As last season was a best-ever year the fall isn't seen as as bad aas it might have been, and results still remain one of the better years and above the multi-year average.

Ruka 2009-10 Season News

The 2008-9 season is still continuing in Ruka, Finland where a ski run is kept open to mid-June. Next season isn't far away either with the opening party for 2009-20 to take place on the November 6th-8th weekend.

The resort has announced improvements ahead of next winter. To begin with the first part of the new RukaVillage hotel combining the best services of hotels and apartments, will be opened in September 2009. In total the building comprises 120 high-quality apartments (ranging in size from 30-90 square metres) and hotel rooms, each with a sauna and kitchen, and breakfast is also included.

New Gondola for Bad Gastein

Austria's Bad Gastein is installing a new eight-seater gondola lift which rises in two sections from the resort to the Stubnerkogel summit.

The Stubnerkogel lift is the key facility in Gastein's ?core skiing territory' Stubnerkogel – Angertal - Schlossalm. The number of ascents on the first section of the lift during a normal winter is between 300,000 and 400,000 and on the second section between 400,000 and 600,000. It is the only feeder lift from Bad Gastein to the core skiing territory.

Cervinia’s Summer Ski Season Begins 27th June

The summer ski lifts on the Italian-side of the Zermatt-Cervinia ski area will add to the year-round ski area on the Swiss side from Saturday, 27th June.

The resulting summer ski area, one of the largest in Europe, extends to 23km (14 miles) of slopes served by 14 lifts, amongst them four cable cars, a gondola and quad and six-seater chairs.

Southern Hemisphere Ski Season 2009 Good to Go

A Fortnight Early

Yet another 25cm (10 inches) of fresh snow yesterday (Sunday 24th) and temperatures hovering just below zero means that Mt Hutt is on course for it's first May opening this millennium with the New Zealand resort still reporting mid-winter conditions that have lasted throughout May and a base depth of one metre (40 inches).

Heavy Snow At Wanaka But No Early Opening

Lake Wanaka in New Zealand and its four international ski areas are enjoying a remarkable amount of early season snow with heavy falls reaching well below the base areas of all four resorts.

Treble Cone has over one metre at mid mountain and staff had to contend with thigh deep snow in the car park after the most recent storms. Groomers are starting to pack down the snow on trail and snowmaking will resume next week in preparation for the scheduled 27 June opening.

Snow in Glasgow This Weekend

Glaswegians should prepare them selves for some very unseasonable weather this weekend when the local SNO!zone indoor snow centre at Braehead will dump more than 60 tonnes of snow on Kelvingrove Park in the centre of the city this Sunday, May 23rd, to create a real snow slope from noon to 6pm.

More snow for Queenstown (NZ) Ski Resorts

More fresh snow on Queenstown's ski areas over the last four days, on top of consistent snowfall throughout May, is delivering spectacular pre-season conditions.

Coronet Peak ski area, scheduled to open in less than three weeks (Saturday 6 June), has received 50 - 100cm of snow in the last four days resulting in an 80cm base at the top of the mountain and a 50cm base at the bottom.

Three Valleys Lift Pass - Up and Down

A six day lift ticket for the world's largest ski area, the Three Valleys, will increase by three percent from 225 Euros last season to 232 Euros in high season (151 Euros off-peak).

However if the pound continues to strengthen the costs for Brits is likely to be lower next winter – currently 232 Euros equals about 204 pounds, when at the pound's lowest point last winter 225 Euros equalled 215 pounds, or around six percent more than Brits would currently have to pay for next season's more expensive ticket.

Skiresort Service International Publish Top Resorts For 2008-9

The German based Skiresort Service International has announced its three TOP-Resorts of the season 2008-9 in their annual Awards, staged since 1998/1999.

"It was a fantastic season, with a lot of snow, mostly good weather, a new world record and a lot of new test reports. We visited 70 different ski resorts in eight countries and a sand ski area in Doha/Qatar." said Oliver Kern of Skiresort Services International.

Salomon Launch Ski Boot With New Recyclable Component

Salomon have become the first manufacturer to use a new polymer made with recyclable material from DuPont Engineering in a new ski boot.

"DuPont Hytrel RS thermoplastic elastomer provides all the performance characteristics of DuPont's traditional Hytrel materials, while offering a more environmentally friendly solution than products that are entirely petroleum-based." said Marsha Craig, global business director, renewably sourced materials, DuPont Performance Materials.

Dolomiti Superski Region Put Onus On Safety

The giant Italian Dolomiti Superski region is continuing to step up its safety campaign, 'Safer ski!' with the greatest onus on skier behaviour.

"The Dolomites Region does not generally have many avalanches and the lifts and cableways are among the safest in the world. Safety on the slopes usually depends on the skiers and their behaviour when coming downhill. Carelessness and high speed, as well as overestimation of their own capabilities are the most common causes of accidents." Said a company spokeserson.

Big Spring Clean at Cairngorm

The Big Spring Clean, a clean up initiative organised by the Ski Club of Great Britain, returns for its second year at Cairngorm Mountain and Nevis Range on Sunday 31st May 2009.

The event which attracted over 100 participants in 2008 is a chance for mountain users to do their bit by picking up litter left by a season's worth of visitors. The event raises awareness about responsible tourism and the seriousness of dropping litter.

US Ski Areas Struggle with Litigation Risk

Multiple reports from different US states this week reflect the attempt by ski areas across the country to lessen the danger of law suits from bankrupting their operations.

Ski laws vary across the US with most states with ski areas having some specific legislation on wintersports. In each case there is a balance to be struck between the responsibilities of the ski area operator and those of the skier or boarder to recognise that skiing is 'inherently dangerous' and that an accident may happen however well the ski area had attempted to lessen the chances of such an event.

Two New Quads And More Snowmaking For Flaine

Two new fixed grip quad chairlifts are due to begin service in Flaine this December, in accordance with to its five year improvement plan, and the resort's famous bucket lift which links two of its sectors, is due to be renovated.

The new fixed grip La Foret quad will be a six minute ride accessing the seater chairlift accessing the beginners' zone. It will rise 300 vertical metres over its 1,770m length and open a direct link to the ski runs from the western part of the Intrawest Village, the Hameau Scandinave and the Refuge du Golf.

New Zealand To Start Ski Season In May

Skiers and riders can look forward to hitting Mt Hutt in New Zealand's slopes later this month as ski area staff work to open two weeks ahead of schedule for the first time in at least 10 years.

Mt Hutt has received more than 170cm (nearly six feet) of snow over the past 12 days resulting in a 110cm (nearly four feet) snow base and a decision to work towards a Queen's Birthday weekend opening on Saturday 30 May (conditions permitting).

Three Bid To Host 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships

Three of the world's classic ski resorts are bidding to host the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships run by the International Ski Federation (FIS).

Italy's Cortina d'Ampezzo, Switzerland's St. Moritz and Vail/Beaver Creek in the USA are all hoping to stage the Championships.

Perisher Starts Snowmaking

Vail Rated For Environmental Efforts By US Government Agency

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ranked Vail's 25th in a list of top corporate green-energy purchasers in the country.

The company purchases wind power credits at its five resorts and head quarters building, helping to fund the expansion of wind farms across the United States.

New Zealand 2009 Ski Season Starts Early

Snow enthusiasts dug out their snow gear and hiked up to the top of Canterbury in New Zealand's Mt Hutt over the weekend to enjoy 'first tracks' of the season.

Snowfall on Thursday and Friday last week and continued cold temperatures has resulted in a 45cm (18 inch) base at the high country ski resort.

Jackson Hole Season Better Than Expected

The launch of their new $31 million Aerial Tram and over 500 inches of snowfall helped Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) experience a higher level of skier visitation than forecasted, with over 438,000 riders on the mountain.

The launch of the new aerial tram at the start of the winter generated record season pass sales, as well as record passholder skier visits. "We can't thank our season passholders, local skiers and snowboarders enough for their continued support" said Jerry Blann, President. "The return of "Big Red" exceeded all of our expectations this past season."

Adelboden Reports Business Up

Adelboden in Switzerland is the latest European ski resort to report business up for the past winter compared to the year before.

"The figures confirm what we have long since suspected: the winter season has been an excellent one. After a successful start to the season the cableway operators recorded high numbers of visitors over Christmas and the New Year. One particularly out-standing highpoint consisted of the FIS Ski World Cup races held on January 10/11." said a resort spokesperson.

First Tracks In Southern Hemisphere 2009 Ski Season

Over half-a-metre (20 inches) of snow has been falling on Australia's ski slopes over the past 48 hours, with most still not expecting to open for nearly six weeks or more.

Snow continues to fall at Perisher in New South Wales. From the peaks to the valleys, a thick layer of snow can be found, making the resort look more like July than April. Another 25cm (10 inches) of snow settled across the upper elevations on Monday night, April 27th.

Compagnie des Alpes expects business up 2 percent on previous season

Compagnie des Alpes, the world's leading ski resort operator, has announced a small fall in sales to the end of March, but expects full season figures to show an improvement of around 2 percent (compared to the record numbers of the previous season. The company operates 17 leading ski areas in the French Alps (including Tignes, Val d'Isère, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Les Menuires, Méribel and Chamonix).
