Over A Foot Of Snow In 24 Hours In Australia

Perisher ski resort received 32cm (13 inches) of fresh snow in 24 hours last Wednesday/Thursday July 22nd/23rd. The new snow turned the resort's snow slopes in to a powdery paradise. To-date an accumulated 191cm (6.3 feet) of snow has settled across the resort, comprising 71cm (2.3 feet) in June and 120cm (four feet) since the beginning of July, allowing Perisher to offer excellent riding conditions across its four resort areas.

Record Coffee Sales At New Zealand Ski Area

Possibly this weeks oddest news item... but then again, coffee matters!

Coffee sales reached record numbers at Coronet Peak in New Zealand during the country's recent school holidays as skiers and riders bought 25,814 hot beverages between them.

80 Year Old Breaks Leg In Ski Jump

An 80 year old man broke his leg on Monday when attempting a two metre ski jump on a black run at Mt Buller ski resort in Australia.

Asked by medics why he had attempted the jump, he is reported to have replied, "Life's too short."

The man was flown by air ambulance to Melbourne for treatment after his friend raised the alarm.

New Chairlifts in The Jungfrau

Switzerland's Jungfrau ski region, one of the world's oldest and most beautiful ski areas, has announced that three new chair lifts will go in to service next winter.

The largest new lifts, a six seater chairlift, is the Eigenordwand on the Arvengarten to Eigergletscher route above Grindelwald and Wengen and will go in to service from 12th December.

The Irish Association of Snowsports Instructors (IASI) have set up an historic agreement with BASS Chamonix Limited, making it the first Licensed Course Provider (LCP).

Las Lenas Invests In Water and Energy Independence

Las Lenas ski resort in Argentina has invested in electricity generators for this current southern hemisphere Winter, allowing the resort to be self sufficient in power production and not reliant on the Argentinian national grid.

The generators are part of a $50 million pesos investment which also includes spending on a magic carpet conveyor lift for children and beginners; additional snow making equipment, web site improvements with online purchasing of services available in English and Portugese, and a new water purification plant.

Swiss Ski Resort Sold By Internet Auction

The Swiss ski area of Winterhorn looks to have been saved from bankruptcy after being put up for sale on an internet auction site.

Claus Dangel, director of the Winterhorn resort, told the Swiss News Agency that a buyer had been found although the deal was not yet fully completed.

2010 Gear Test Camps - Autumn At Tignes

Revamped Cable Car Opens in Four Valleys

The Tortin-Gentianes cable-car that serves the Mont Fort glacier in the Swiss Four Valleys ski area re-opened on Saturday following extensive renovations.

The cable car cabins have been replaced by new cabins with panoramic views and automatic doors. Other behind-the-scenes improvements mean boarding time will also be reduced

New Six Seater Chairlift Leads Courchevel News For 2009-10

Courchevel will install a new six seater chairlift for the coming season, equipped with the Magnestick system, to modernize the link between Courchevel 1850 and Courchevel 1650. This is the main part of a host of initiatives and improvements for the coming winter at the famous French resort.

London Ride 09

LONDON RIDE 09 - Saturday 24th October 2009

Ride Freesport is once again proud to announce the 6th edition of the London Ride event series. The London Ride 09, presented by Snow + Rock and Switzerland Tourism (www.myswitzerland.com), will take place at the Kensington Olympia on Saturday 24th October and will be run in association with and as part of the Metro Ski + Snowboard Show 2009. Athletes from across the globe will compete in the Big Air event and show the London crowds the latest tricks on the freestyle ski scene.

Saas Fee Ride 10 Date Confirmed

SAAS-FEE RIDE 10 - Date Confirmed for July 17th 2010

The resort of Saas-Fee and Ride Freesport have confirmed that next year's Saas-Fee Ride 10 will take place on Saturday 17th July 2010. The event will cover the same format with a Big Air competition and Rail Jam session. The event will be open to pros and amateurs and will take place in the Snowpark on the Allalin Glacier.

SAAS-FEE RIDE 09 - Event Postponed due to Bad Weather

This year's Saas-Fee Ride 09 event has unfortunately been postponed until next summer due to unusual weather patterns over the past few days. Extremely high temperatures and the forecasted heavy rain for most of Friday and Saturday morning has made it impossible to shape the kicker for the Big Air contest to the standard needed for the event.

Treble Cone hosts fourth annual Mapei Children's Ski Race this Thursday

For the fourth year, Treble Cone is hosting the widely acclaimed Mapei Ski Race this Thursday, July 16th at 10:00AM. They expect over 100 competitors under the age of thirteen competing in Novice and Elite categories. Fiona Stevens at Snow Vision, the Wanaka Ski Club, Cardrona HPC and Treble Cone have also put together three $500 scholarships that all athletes will be eligible for as well

Snow Conditions Good Across Southern Hemisphere

Fresh snow in Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Chile has been reported in the past week. Virtually all of the southern hemisphere's ski areas, including Tiffindell in South Africa, are now open.

In South America snow conditions are good at many resorts in Argentina and Chile.

Online Ski Passes and other news from Bariloche

Catedral ski area, Bariloche, Argentina the biggest ski area in South America is selling an online ski pass this winter enabling guests to purchase ski passes wherever they are with a credit card. The online ski pass then automatically downloads to a KeyCard or Proximity Card electronic lift ticket. When guests arrive at the ski slopes the ticket is activated as they pass through the first turnstile to the ski lifts.

Intrawest Look At Cost Saving Measures

Saas Fee Hotel Wins Environmental Awards and Offers Rain Insurance

The five star Ferienart Resort and Spa in Saas Fee has won more awards for its environmental achievements.

The hotel already achieved the first Swiss Milestone for sustainable development In November last year. The Milestone is the most important prize of the Swiss tourism industry. This year the hotel has received a new special prize for the first time for the country's best progress in sustainable development. Finally the hotel has achieved the ISO 14000 global environmental management certification.

Finnish Snow Hotel Ready For 9th Season This Winter

Whilst the famous Swedish Ice Hotel is made mostly of snow, the more recent Finnish Snow Hotel has more ice in its construction – 300 tonnes to be precise.

Located nearly 200km above the Arctic Circle and close to the ski resorts of Levi and Yllas, the SnowHotel has an IceBar serving Finlandia rather than Absolut vodka but with drinks still served in ice glasses and an ice disco in which to slip—slide the night away. Or you can just marvel at the magnificent sculpture art all around the area.

40 Years of Bond At Murren

2009-10: Goodbye Snow Train, Hello Ski Train

The Snow Train service which operated an overnight sleeper service between London and the French Alps has been axed by operator Rail Europe for the coming winter.

The service, famous for its high quality staff and low quality French rolling stock had been reported to be growing business as people switched from air to rail and enjoyed the added bonus of an extra day's skiing in the Alps by travelling overnight to the slopes. However Rail Europe are blaming the current economic climate for cutting the service.

UNESCO Gives Bulgaria Last Chance on Ski Development

At the same meeting in which UNESCO declared the Italian Dolomites a World Heritage site, they issued an ultimatum to Bulgaria over ski resort development in Pirin National Park.

The Park had been granted World Heritage site status since 1983 but that status has been increasingly and repeatedly challenged following on going ski resort development in the area. UNESCO has held five consultation meetings over Pirin since 2002.

Fourth and Final Ski Area Opens for Season at Lake Wanaka, New Zealand

Lake Wanaka's 2009 ski season is officially underway with all four fields open for business.

Good snowfalls throughout May combined with a prolonged period of cool and calm weather, ideal for snow making, has equipped the mountains across the region with one metre bases providing the best opening conditions in a decade. A cold front moving across the region over the past few days has provided a timely deposit of fresh snow for the July school holidays starting on Monday.

Heavy Snow In Australia

The great start to winter 2009 is continuing in Australia with resorts reporting larger than expected snowfalls in the past few days.

After hoping for a few centimetres of powder, Mt Hotham received 47cm of fresh snow in 48 hours last Thursday/Friday, just in time for the weekend, taking the resort's natural snowdepth to 58cm or two feet.

New Lift For Gulmarg May Be World’s Highest Chairlift

A new chairlift at Gulmarg in India's Kashmir region seems likely to be the world's highest lift of this type when it opens.

Gulmarg currently operates the world's third highest gondola lift, behind two lifts in China, and the world's second highest ski area, behind the small facility on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in China, following the demise of the former highest ski area in Bolivia which has closed due to climate change melting the snow pack. However Gulmarg can claim to be the highest 'proper' ski resort in the world with runs up to 5km (three miles) long.

Castleford SNO!zone to Support Local Hospice

This summer the SNO!zone in Castleford Xscape will be encouraging people to support the Prince of Wales Hospice when they provide a full day of entertainment in aid of the charity.

The indoor snow slope at Castleford is hoping to raise lots of money on the 18th July with a new event, LIVEZONE, where everyone will be entertained from 12noon until the evening.

WWF Commend Engadin For Environmentally Friendly Ski Event

The Swiss branch of the WWF has given a positive report on the annual ski marathon in the Engadin region around St Moritz, which is one of the country's larger sporting events, attracting thousands of competitors.

A newly released WWF Report on the efforts of major Swiss sporting events to be environmentally friendly says that the Engadin Marathon makes a concerted effort to reduce its environmental impact, by encouraging participants to use public transport to reach the area, using power from renewable sources at the event, providing bio-degradable containers for food, and bio foods among other initiatives.
