Big Stars Sign For World Alpine Rockfest

American skiing superstars Bode Miller and Ted Ligety are among the first to sign up for the first 'World Alpine Rockfest which is being staged on December 22nd by the Paganella ski pass region in the Italian Dolomites with a prize purse of 100,000 Euros ($150,000 US) for the winner.

Switzerland’s 08/09 Season was Best For Five Years

An annual study of business reported by Switzerland's ski lift operators has revealed that the country enjoyed its best winter for five years last season.

"In spite of the global economic turmoil it was the early arrival of reliable snow conditions, coupled with favorable weather at weekends and holidays throughout the winter season that did it." Said report author Laurant Vanat.

2009-10 Season Snowmaking Begins in North America

Cold temperatures and natural snowfall have arrived earlier than expected in Colorado, USA allowing Loveland Ski Area, one of the world's highest altitude resorts, to officially kick-off snowmaking for the 2009-2010 ski season.

"Our Trail Maintenance department has been busy preparing the hill, and have started beautifully with all the necessary conditions to start blowing snow. The weather forecast for the next few days looks very favorable for snowmaking," said Eric Johnstone, Loveland's Snowmaking and Trail Maintenance Manager.

Whistler Goes 100% Renewable For Olympic Year

Whistler is set to open a new hydro electric system that will generate enough renewable energy to match the entire resort's power news.

"This is going to be a monumental winter season for Whistler Blackcomb. Excitement is mounting for the 2010 Winter Games and we are thrilled to showcase our world-class mountains and PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola to the world," says Stuart Rempel, Senior VP of Marketing and Sales, Whistler Blackcomb.

Win First Turns Of The Season In St Anton

St Anton will open on 27th November and the famous Austrian resort has launched a VIP-competition to give entrants the chance to win pole position and carve the first line of the new season with ski legend Karl Schranz.

On the morning of the 27th the lucky winner will ride the Galzigbahn to the top with a glass of champagne and canapés to hand before becoming the first skier to ski the piste and officially open the season to all. The prize also includes two nights in a four star hotel and two lift passes.

Les 2 Alpes Launches New Autumn Opening Festival

After 19 years of the Mondial Du Snowboard, the huge annual October opening party staged by glacier-ski resort Les 2 Alpes, the leading French centre has announced an all new celebration of the start-of-the-season this October.

The new Rock Of Snowboard Tour will feature many of the same successful elements of new season equipment testing and a great party atmosphere, with some new ideas as well. It will be staged on October 24th and 25th, 2009 on the glacier at 3200metres. The glacier remains open to Sunday 1st November.

Squaw Valley Upgrades Chairlift

Squaw Valley's High Camp double chair is being upgraded to a triple chairlift this winter. The new High Camp Triple Chairlift improves access to the multiple terrain parks and also to the High Camp area's extensive beginner terrain, restaurants, ice skating rink, Lagoon and Spa, and Olympic Museum.

Mountain Riders clean up at Ski Resorts

Mountain Riders Clean 30 Tonnes Of Waste From 55 Resorts In France And UK

The Mountain Riders environmental group has issued a report on its annual spring cleaning activities across French and now British ski areas and note that 3,500 volunteers turned out to clean up the slopes of 55 participating ski resorts collecting in total 30 tonnes of waste from the ski slopes, 56% of it recyclable, 57% of it left by tourists.

New Gondola For Jasna

One of the ski world's largest summer construction projects this summer is at the leading Slovak resort of Jasna where a major new gondola project is under construction.

The new Grand Brhliska gondola is nearly 2km long and rises 320 vertical metres between 1100 and 1420m. It replaces an older four-passengers-per-cabin lift, the new eight passenger cabins give the lift a maximum capacity of 2,400 skiers per hour – double that of the lift it replaces. It is also 328m longer than the previous lift.

Prices in The Alps fall a little for Brits

Although it is too early to say exactly how much Brits can expect to pay in the Alps this winter, the recent gains of the pound against the Euro and the Swiss Franc means that even modest increases in resort are offset, compared to winter 08-09, even though it currently remains weaker than 18 months ago in winter 07-08.

Super Chairlift for Saalbach

Saalbach is making one of the biggest ever investments in a chairlift this summer to upgrade the Hasenauerköpfl from a quad chair to a state of the art eight seater chairlift with pull down bubble weather-protection covers. The 7m Euro lift will also have heated seats.

Kaunertal Announces Season Opening Events For October

Austria's Kaunertal glacier will officially open for the 2009-10 snow sports season on October 16th, with an opening festival weekend running through to the 18th. It's one of the earliest opening dates for a northern hemisphere resort.

The event will include snowboard and freeski contests, concerts and parties as well as the "Testival" which includes brand new material for the 09/10 season.

Breckenridge Celebrates 25 years of Snowboarding

This season will be the 150th anniversary of the founding of the town of Breckenridge, Colorado, and will also mark 25 years of snowboarding at Breckenridge Ski Resort.

The resort was one of the first to embrace snowboarding, and to host one of the initial major snowboard competitions in the industry, The World Snowboarding Championships, or "The World's," in 1986.
