The Humble Velogemel

In these tough economic times, it could be a good opportunity to save money on your ski pass and jump on a (snow) bike instead. Well, probably not, but have you ever ridden on a velogemel?

Probably not (again), but the good news is that you can get on a Velgomel and even represent Britain (in your mind) in the up coming Velogemel World Championships all within the week?

Snow Forecast Summary - 27th January 2011

Published : 27-Jan-2011 10:01

North America continues to enjoy the best skiing in the hemisphere at present, with significant new snow adding to already impressive depths in British Columbia, Canada and across Colorado in the United States.

The European situation has improved, but remains mixed. Austria has seen the welcome return of significant snowfalls this past week and many Swiss ski areas have also had a bit of a refresh. France has remained largely dry but still cold and, although urgently in need of snow low down, continues to give great skiing above around 1,800 metres. Some Italian resorts have had fresh snow, although those that missed out still generally have good conditions at median levels and above.

Snow Forecast Summary - 14th January 2011

Published : 14-Jan-2011 09:46

Last Week

Well it's certainly been an "interesting" week as far as the European Alps are concerned. The week started with unseasonally high temperatures and heavy rain in many places, right up to altitudes of 2,000 metres. Although that was to the immediate detriment of the snow pack, the rain quickly turned to snow and the last three days have seen significant snow fall and lower temperatures.

Enjoy Tree Skiing? Watch out for the Tree Wells - please!

Published : 10-Jan-2011 10:20

Two fatalities in two weeks at Whitefish ski resort have highlighted a danger often overlooked when skiing amongst the trees.

Deep snow naturally forms "wells" around trees where the snow is much less dense and deep. Unfortunate riders (of skis, snowboards or even snowmobiles) can plunge into these holes and can find escape impossible as surrounding snow collapses on top of them.

Snow Forecast Summary - 6th January 2011

Published : 06-Jan-2011 11:40

The past week has been relatively quiet, with settled weather almost everywhere and significant new snow just about confined to Norway and Colorado.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

The next few days are going to see significant precipitation across The Alps but it is going to be accompanied by relatively mild, even warm, temperatures. This will mean rain to around 2,000 metres in many areas before temperatures fall again. The exact mix of rain and snow will depend, as usual, on local factors although the snow line is likely to descend quite quickly as the weekend ends and should bring snow below 1,500 metres by mid-week. The East of The Alps (Austria) will likely be a few degrees cooler than elsewhere.
