Snow Forecast Summary - 27th January 2011

Published : 27-Jan-2011 10:01

North America continues to enjoy the best skiing in the hemisphere at present, with significant new snow adding to already impressive depths in British Columbia, Canada and across Colorado in the United States.

The European situation has improved, but remains mixed. Austria has seen the welcome return of significant snowfalls this past week and many Swiss ski areas have also had a bit of a refresh. France has remained largely dry but still cold and, although urgently in need of snow low down, continues to give great skiing above around 1,800 metres. Some Italian resorts have had fresh snow, although those that missed out still generally have good conditions at median levels and above.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Temperatures will ease a little over the next few days, although still remaining below seasonal averages just about everywhere. From the latest forecast runs, this coming weekend should bring a little light snow across The Alps with further snow possible mid-week; although unlikely to be huge falls they should do enough to improve conditions markedly at some of the lower resorts. The cold, clear weather of late will continue to dominate, with plenty of sunshine.

Further out, in around ten days time, the forecast models are starting to hint at a significant change to the current and recent weather patterns (fingers crossed) so we'll be keeping an eye on that...

Off Piste in The Alps

Please continue to be vigilant and take local advice before skiing away from the marked runs. The continuing cold weather has prevented any "freeze-thaw" cycles from stabilising the snow pack and major ski areas are stressing the presence of large (and unstable) wind slabs remaining in place off piste.

Stay Safe!
