The Swatch Nines takes place in Mürren this weekend

Published : 19-Apr-2023 08:10

The Swatch Nines makes its debut on the Schilthorn above Mürren, Switzerland on Saturday 22 April.

If you've never seen the Swatch Nines before, it's slightly different from your 'standard' freestyle event.
The slopes of the Swiss resort have been transformed into a futuristic snowpark using cutting-edge creativity.

The design process behind the Swatch Nines is widely considered the most creative and visually spectacular setup in snowsports.

Months before the first rider drops in, the Nines team—in close coordination with leading snowpark builders and athletes—will be hard at work conceptualizing the setup. Athletes including Max Moffatt, Fridtjof "Fridge" Tischendorf, Olivia Asselin and Jesper Tjäder all gathered at the Nines headquarters in Innsbruck, Austria to help plan this year's event.

The final result is very impressive: the first feature is a big jump that includes take-offs in all directions. Nicknamed the 'Formation Feature', it's going to allow multiple riders to hit the air at the same time. Further down, a multi-purpose feature combines tunnels, domes and a complete skate bowl.

Competitors include snowboarding greats like Anna Gasser (Austria) and Dusty Hendrickson (USA), with skiers Tess Ledeux (France) and Jesper Tjäder (Sweden).

Flying the flag for the UK is snowboarder Mia Brookes, coming off the back of a stunning debut season that saw her win gold in Slopestyle at the World Freestyle Ski Championships.

The complete riders' list is available on the Swatch Nines website https://www.thenines.cc/riders.
