South-eastern US Resorts Ends Season in February After Record Warm Temps

While some parts of the north-western US have reported over four feet of fresh snowfall in the past week and most major ski areas from coast to coast are currently being dumped on, the country's southeast has experienced two consecutive weeks of record warm temperatures, far above the seasonal norms for February.

42 British School Children Extend US Ski Trip As Passports Accidentally Destroyed

A group of British school children and their teachers, who had been skiing by Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, have had their stay in the US extended after the motel where they were staying apparently accidentally destroyed all but one of their 42 passports.

Swiss Ski Centres Divided, Big Resorts Doing Well, Smaller Centres Closed

The main Swiss destination ski resorts are reported to have bounced back after some faced snow-shortage issues at the start of the years.
Swissinfo reports the Franco-Swiss Portes du Soleil ski area says it is enjoyed record business in February after having limited terrain open in the first half of January. Although February was largely dry and the latter half warm, most resorts have kept most of their terrain open and say the sunshine helped boost visitor numbers.

50 Year Lift Pass Offered as Competition Prize

The French ski resort of Formiguères, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France, close to the border with Andorra, is celebrating 50 years since it first started operating in1973, on Thursday March 2nd.
A day of birthday festivities ais planned, including the announcement of the winner of a prize draw which will see someone win a 50 year ski pass, valid up to the resort's centenary and with an estimated value of €27,500. The pass will be valid in the TRIO Pyrénées resorts which also include Porté-Puymorens and Cambre d'Aze as well as Formiguères.

Snowfall in the Pyrenees

Ski areas in the Pyrenees are among the first in mainland Europe to report snowfall in the last fortnight.
A front moving north from the Mediterranean has brough cold temperatures and snowfall to ski slopes in Andorra, France and Spain.

Summer Snowfall in New Zealand

There has been unexpected heavy summer snowfall in New Zealand.
Mt Hutt (pictured today) says its is postponing its 'summer' opening, planned for this weekend, until Sunday, while ice rime is removed from lifts and hiking and biking trails checked.

New Oldest Snow Sports World Champion

In a world where it seems to best freestyle skiers and snowboarders are getting to be younger and younger teenagers, there's some hope for older snow sports competitors with the news that 42-year-old Austrian snowboarder Andreas Prommegger has become, it's believed, the oldest world champion in snow sports history.

Up to 1.2m Of Snowfall In 72 Hours in Western North America

Heavy snowfall has returned to Western Canada with Lake Louise posting half a metre (nearly two feet) of fresh snowfall in the past 48 hours.
Other resorts in Alberta and BC are reporting powder conditions too, as are resorts in US states including Washington, Montana and Wyoming south of the border. 24 hour totals include 25cm for Fernie in BC, 20cm at Norquay near Banff and 33cm at Alpental in Washington Stat.

Riksgränsen Opening For 2023 Season on Friday

Sweden's famous "spring skiing capital" of Riksgränsen will open for its 2023 season this coming Friday, February 24th.
Riksgränsen is one of half-a-dozen ski areas in the northern hemisphere that don't open until spring, or thereabouts, in its case partly because it is too dark, up at its northerly latitude 200km within the Arctic circle, until later in the year. It's sister resort of Bjorkliden opened in mid February.

First Greek Alpine Skiing World Championship Medal

Greek skier AJ Ginnis has become the first from his country to win an Alpine Ski World Championships medal in the 92-year history of the now bi-annual competition.
Ginnis was lying in second after the first run and held on to silver as Austria's Manu Feller, who was leading after the first run, ended up out of the medals.

New Runs and Finland’s First 8 Seat Chairlift For Ruka

Ruka ski area in Finland is expanding its terrain with four new runs served by a new high-speed chairlift on the east side of the fell in the Masto sector.
Work will begin in May to install Finland's first eight-person high-speed chairlift, the Masto Express, and to create four new ski slopes. The lift will also be the fastest in Finland with a speed of 6 m/s and carry up to 4,000 skiers per hour to the top of Masto. It will replace two existing drag lifts.

Heavy Snowfall in The Rockies

[b]While much of the ski world has been reporting fairly dry conditions recently, ski areas in the Rockies and further south in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of New Mexico have been posting big new snow accumulations from the latest storm.
Colorado's Wolf Creek Ski Area (Pictured above this week) reported 29 inches (72cm) of fresh snowfall in the latest storm, taking its all-natural snow depth past the 1oo inches/2.5 metre mark to 102 inches at its midpoint with Telluride another big winner. Taos, further south in New Mexico, posted 26 inches (65cm) in 48 hours.

Matterhorn Glacier Crossing Confirms 1st July 2023 Opening

After a year of largely pandemic related delays, The Matterhorn Glacier Ride II, a state-of-the-art gondola connecting the Klein Matterhorn above Zermatt with Testa Grigia in Italy, has an opening date: 1 July 2023.
The new 3S cableway will create the highest border crossing in the Alps making it possible to travel within cabin lifts between Zermatt in Switzerland and Breuil-Cervinia in Italy.

Bond Back in Kitzbühel

Even before there was a James Bond book on movie franchise, author Ian Fleming stayed in Kitzbühel as a young man in the late 1920s.
Fleming left the Royal British military academy and his mother then sent him to Kitzbühel to improve his language skills in German for a career in the Foreign Service. He lived in what was then a guest house but the 5-star Tennerhof Gourmet & Spa Hotel and also attended a private school in the resort. You can book to stay in the 'Ian Fleming - James Bond Double Room 007' at the Tennerghof where Fleming had his digs.

New Six-Seater Chairlift for Hemsedal

Scandinavia's largest ski areas operator, SkiStar, have announced 598 million SEK (about £47m) in Hemsedal, Norway.
The biggest part of this spend will go on the new Lodge Express high-speed, six-seat chairlift, which will be operational next winter. Money is also going on more efficient snowmaking and ski slope improvements.

New Black Swiss Tunnel Run Close To Opening

A spectacular new very-black rated ski run is set to open in the next few weeks at the Glacier 3000 ski area above Diablerets near Gstaad.
Among the things making the run very special is that it incorporates a specially cut 265m long tunnel through the rock face, linking the Cabane des Diablerets to the Col du Pillon.

Les Arcs Aims to Break Own Torchlit Descent World Record

Les Arcs has announced plans to break its own world record of 2,887 skiers simultaneously skiing holding torches. The new attempt will take place later this month on the evening of Wednesday, 22nd February 2023. All skiers who can ski to a basic standard with parallel turns, without needing poles on a blue run who are in the resort at the time are welcome to take part.

New Gondola for Pila in the Aosta Valley

A new detachable 10-seater gondola is planned for the ski resort of Pila in Italy.
The new lift will be in two sections, connecting the arrival area of the existing Aosta-Pila gondola lift with the Platta de Grevon area, located between the Conca di Pila and the Cogne valley.

Colorado Back Country Ski Area Plans Second Chairlift

Silverton Mountain in Colorado, famous for its deep powder, cat skiing, cheap heliskiing and hike-to freeriding terrain, has announced plans to install a second chairlift.
When Silverton opened in 2002 it had permission to create up to three lifts on the land, as well as limited base facilities, but for the past 21 years has operated with one fixed-grip double chairlift, bought second-hand from Mammoth Mountain.

North-eastern North American Resorts Shut Down Ahead of Dangerous Cold

A large number of ski areas in Quebec, New York state, Vermont and Maine have announced they're closing for up to four days due to an intense Polar vortex that is currently descending on the area.
Temperatures widely in the -30 Celsius (-20s Fahrenheit) and likely to feel like -40s (-40s F) with wind chill are just beginning to take hold. Some areas in Quebec expect the windchill to reach -50+C (-58F) or even -60C (-76F).

77% of Older Skiers Failing to Take Out Ski Insurance, Insurer Claims

A new study, carried out for Post Office Travel Insurance, has found that more than three-quarters (77%) of over 64s didn't take out winter sports cover on their last ski trip. The study also found 23% had a trip-ending accident on the slopes.

Snowfall that's expected to continue for at least a week - on and off - has arrived in Austria from the north, and is also dumping on the mountains of the Czech and Slovak Republics.
Among the ski areas posting 15-25cm (6-10") of fresh snowfall in the past 24 hours are Saalbach Hinterglemm (pictured) and Zell am See - Kaprun.
