The snow storms which started in the Alps a week ago have continued to bring healthy accumulations to the slopes and returned the region to something more like 'normal' conditions for the start of 2015 after the unusually dry and warm December.

Fresh Snow In The Alps

The snow has started falling in the Alps, beginning to transform conditions at many resorts where snow has been badly needed.

Resorts across the region have reported up to 30cm of snow in the past 24 hours and up to three times that much is forecasted for others over the next 72 hours.

La Plagne and Les Arcs Cut Christmas Lift Ticket Prices with 40% Of Terrain Open

La Plagne has just issued this statement regarding its Christmas opening:

After the opening of the altitude sites of the ski area on December 13th, this Saturday, December 20th, is the official opening of La Plagne. For Christmas week, the occupancy rate in resort is 54% on average with a total of nearly 200 000 night stays. With the current snow conditions, about 40% of the ski area will be open. The Paradiski ski link between La Plagne and Les Arcs/Peisey-Vallandry will not be opening yet. The local tourist offices and service providers are ready to offer alternative activities and entertainment.

Artificial Snowmaking ‘Cloud’ Debuts at Obergurgl

New technology created to produce high-quality snow is being tested in Obergurgl in the Austrian Tirol.

The artificial cloud the machine creates produces low-density snow using considerably less energy and water than traditional snow machines, which its designers hope could potentially revolutionize artificial snow-making.

Zermatt 'Closer' Thanks to New Train Services

A new half-hourly service that's started this winter means Zermatt is quicker to reach by train than ever before, the resort claims.

The new services introduce by The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn increases the daily tally of trains on the route by a quarter, from 60 to 75, and Zermatt says that new connections made possible by the additional services means for guests arriving from Paris/Geneva and the French part of Switzerland should find their journey is 30 minutes shorter.

World Cup Training Cancelled at Val d’Isere Due To Too Much Snow

As British newspapers publish stories about too little snow in the Alps, it appears it's not as clear cut bad news as they imply as Val d'Isere has been forced to cancel World Cup training runs this morning due to too much snow on the course!

120 people are trying to clear the snow off in readiness for tomorrow's race which is forecast sunny.

Grand Massif Postpones Opening

The Grand Massif have this afternoon announced that they will not be opening as planned this coming Saturday (20th). We've seen reports that pre-booked lift passes for the week are being refunded. They will be reviewing the situation as and when new snow arrives.

Ski Area Makes Helmet Wearing Obligatory Despite No Legal Requirement To Do So

A small ski area in New Brunswick, Canada, has decided to require all its users to wear helmets, even though there's no law in the province that requires them to do so.

Poley Mountain is believed to be the first area in the world to require helmet use by all slope users, although it's increasingly common now for resorts to require on mountain employees and participants in their ski school programmes and similar to wear helmets.

“We’re Open!” Say Ski Resorts

Ski resorts in the Alps are getting increasingly concerned about British media reports that it's the worst start to winter for 40 years, complete with pictures of summer in Les Arcs (Daily Mail)

Italy's Dolomiti Superski has launched a PR offensive wanting to get the news out that a quarter of its vast 1,200km of pistes are open, and that it expects "Almost all" to be open in a week's time for the Christmas holidays.

New Bond Movie to be Filmed in Tirol

The 24th Bond film, and the fourth starring Daniel Craig, Spectre, is to be filmed in Tirol during January and February.

Suitably top secret negotiations led to the agreement which will see the internationally famous resort of Sölden in the Ӧtztal and less well known Obertilliach in the East Tirol region become venues for the film, which is already scheduled for release on 25th November 2015.

More Dress Like Santa Day Ski Days

Whistler is the latest resort to offer free skiing to anyone arriving at the slopes dressed as Santa Claus. Or at least the first 100 people who turned up dressed like Santa or Mrs. Claus at 8am this morning got free tickets.

The idea is increasingly popular at ski areas around the world. Last weekend, Saturday, December 6, coincided with Saint Nicholas Day itself and, as reported on J2Ski, Verbier was among resorts opening with free skiing for people arriving to ski or board dressed as Santa.

Scotland’s 2014-15 Ski Season Starts This Weekend

24th Bond film, Spectre, will be filmed in the Austrian Tirol

007, the most famous secret agent in the world, will start filming the 24th Bond film, Spectre, in the Austrian Tirol. Daniel Craig, will play Bond for the 4th time, embarking on his alpine adventures along with the other stars in the ski resorts of Sölden, in the Ӧtztal and Obertilliach, in the East Tirol region. This is the largest film production ever to be ‚made in Tirol' and will bring with it not only immediate economic benefits, but also long term media impact, creating future film-tourism opportunities.

Unexpected World Cup Weekend in Åre

Although World Cup events from the weekend after this are now being approved to be staged as scheduled in the Alps, this weekend's races on the men's and women's tour scheduled for Val d'Isère and Courchevel have been moved to Åre, so both tours will meet there tomorrow. The Swedish resort is not reported to have much snow on the ground either, but it does offer consistent low temperatures at present which the FIS had doubts about for the Alps this weekend, although releases from the two less-than-happy French resorts indicate they did not.

Vail To Create Biggest Ski Area in US at Park City

Vail Resorts will create the largest ski area in the US for winter 2015-16 thanks to a $50m spend this coming spring/summer on their new acquisition of Park City Mountain resort, linking it to Canyons ski area, which the company also controls, with a new gondola.

Vonn Moves Closer to Taking ‘All time’ Greatest Women skier Stats Title

After almost a year out of competition due to injury, and in only her second race within 24 hours of returning to the World Cup tour, Lindsey Vonn returned to the top of the podium at the second downhill race at Lake Louise at the weekend.

The 30-year-old American great finished nearly half a second ahead of Stacey Cook while Vonn's long time friend Julia Mancuso finished third to complete a US clean sweep after European racers had dominated in the race the previous day.

Free Skiing for Santas At Verbier Today

Val d'Isere and Courchevel World Cup Races Cancelled

After course inspections for World Cup races planned for Courchevel and Val d'Isère over the weekend of 13/14 December the FIS has decided to cancel both races.

They will be staged in Are, Sweden instead, another coup for the Scandinavian resort which earlier this year beat Cortina to win the candidacy to host the 2019 Alpine Skiing World Championships.

Vanessa Mae Launches Two Appeals Against Four Year Ban

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CSA), based in Lausanne, Switzerland, has announced that Vanessa Mae, known as Vanessa Vanakorn, has filed two appeals against the decisions taken by the Hearing Panel of the International Ski Federation (FIS) of 6 November 2014 and by the FIS Council on 18 November 2014, in relation to her qualification for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Ms Vanakorn had had three weeks in which to make her appeal.

BBC wrote:Charlie Guest, the UK number one female alpine slalom skier, fractured vertebrae in her spine after falling and landing on a boulder.

The 20-year-old, from Perth, spent eight hours strapped to a backboard during the 250km (155 mile) journey to hospital from the remote slope.
