Over A Metre of Snow in Montana

A state of emergency has been declared in parts of Montana as a severe 'winter' storm impacts that state at an unprecedented early date in the autumn.

At the latest report yesterday evening Western US time up to four feet (1.2 metres) of snow was reported to have fallen in some parts of the state, although more widespread totals were two feet (60cm).

Perisher To Post ‘Longest Season in Memory’

Australia's largest ski area, Perisher, will be staying open for another fortnight to October 14th, and a resort statement says that this 136 days of skiing and snowboarding will make 2019 the resort's, "longest season in memory."

In common with several other Australian resorts Perisher opened a fortnight early for the 2019 season after heavy snow in late May.

30 Days of Snowsport Returning In October

A promotional programme that aims to get more people skiing and boarding by offering free or discounted introductory sessions at English dry slopes and indoor snow centres is back from October 1st to 30th.

Snowsport England's '30 Days of Snowsport' returns for its sixth year, aiming to build on last years total of 8,500 people taking part, many of them complete beginners trying skiing or snowboarding for the first time.

Molltal Glacier re-opens As More Than Half Open Ski Areas in North are in Austria

[b]Austria's Molltal glacier has re-opened taking the number of ski areas open in Europe and the Northern Hemisphere to 11. Six of those centres are in Austria, with a seventh, Kaunertal, planning to open this Saturday and an eight, Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun, early next week.

Denmark’s Power Plant Dry Ski Slope Opening Next Week

A ski slope down the roof of a 'heat-to-energy' power plant in Copenhagen is due to finally open next week.

The power-plant-dry-ski-slope is the brainchild of the BIG architectural firm that has built a reputation for innovative design on flagship projects worldwide.

Tignes Delays Planned Start to 2019-20 Season This Weekend

The French 2019-20 ski season won't start this Saturday as hoped with Tignes announcing this morning a delay to the start of its autumn glacier season – and blaming climate change for it:

"Global warming and its repercussions are more relevant than ever, with Tignes witnessing first hand these effects upon its mountain domain: record temperatures seen throughout Europe this summer and over the previous few weeks have particularly affected the Grande Motte glacier.

Fresh Snowfall Today in the Alps

It has been a snowy day at some areas in the Alps above around 2000 metres.

After a sunny weekend glacier ski areas have reported up to 10cm of snowfall above 3000 metres today, with ski areas in Austria, where five glacier ski areas are already open, particularly excited by it.

Tour Operators seek to Re-assure After Thomas Cook Collapse

Ski tour operators have moved to reassure skiers booked on holidays with them that they will aim to minimise any disruption resulting from the company going in to administration.

Although Thomas Cook has not operated a ski division as such for some years, the company's size means it is a part of some ski holiday packages by other operators.

New Gondola and Lockers at Saint Martin de Belleville

Skiers staying in the authentic 3 Valleys resort of St Martin de Belleville will have access to the slopes via a brand new gondola lift this winter.

The new lift will have a number of improvements including ground level boarding, faster speeds and increased capacity to 2,400 people per hour.

Sheep Come Down, Skiers Go Up

Italy's Val Senales glacier ski area has become the third in the past 24 hours to open for the 2019-20 ski season after the heavy snow of last weekend.

The centre reports perfect conditions this morning after more than 50cm of snowfall last Friday to Monday, with blue sky conditions now.

First Snows of Pre-19-20 Winter in the USA

The first clearly visible snowfalls on the late astronomical summer/early meteorological summer have been reported in the US Northwest – causing great excitement on social media.

Resorts in Montana, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado all posted images of 5-10cm snowfalls on their higher slopes although no official stats were published.

Just Another €100 Million Spend in Dolomiti Superski

Italy's long standing biggest ski region, Dolomiti Superski, established back in 1974, says its member lift companies are investing around €100 million in infrastructure upgrades, ahead of the 2019-20 ski season which kicks off there on 30th November.

Glaciers Opening with Deep Fresh Snow After Heavy Falls

At least three Alpine glacier ski areas have announced they'll be opening this coming weekend following big snowfalls over the past week.

The Stubai and Solden glaciers will be opening this Friday, 13th September for their 2019-20 ski season, with Val Senales over the border in Italy due to open the following day, Saturday 14th, for theirs.

The search is on for a Female GB Paralympic snowboarder

GB Snowsport is searching for new talent to join their team in the lead up to the next Winter Paralympics.

Snowboarding was introduced into the Winter Paralympic programme in 2014, with GB's first riders – James Barnes-Miller and Owen Pick – competing in 2018.

Snow Falling on Five Continents

The snowfall in the Alps is intensifying today with 30-40cm more snow expected in total above 3,000 metres on glaciers and high peaks. The snow has been falling down to about 1500 metres too.

Currently five glaciers are operational for snowsports although closed today in some cases due to the weather. They include Hintertux in Austria, Saas Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland and Cervinia (last day of summer ski season today) and Passo Stelvio in Italy. Val Senales in Italy is due to open next weekend and half-a-dozen more Austrian ski areas plus Tignes in France by the end of September.

Snow Falling in the Alps

What is forecast to be a week of September snowfall is underway in the Alps with the Stubai glacier in Austria reporting 10cm of fresh snow this morning.

Snow in early September is normal above 3,000 metres and last year there was a similar fall in the last few days of August.

Switzerland Offers Another 12,000 Free Lift Passes for Children

After the success of last year's initial ballot, Switzerland's Kids4free programme will be back online in next month, the Swiss National Tourist Office in London says, with the chance for anyone to win one of 12,000 one week ski passes that are being given away to children up to and including 12 years of age. You just have to complete an online application to be in the ballot.

New Slopes and Lifts Above Morzine

Two new pistes will open this winter in the Morzine Ski area.

In the Nyon sector the existing red-rated slope "l'aigle rouge" will be completely re-routed, from the Nyon peak at 2,019m down to the Nyon plateau at 1,413m.

The re-routing work is being completed over a huge 700 metre long area that will result in the final piste being 2km long after the changes.

Man Plans to Ski Up and Down Everest Without Extra Oxygen

The Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel is reported to be back in the Himalayas with the intention of becoming the first person to ski down Everest without using supplementary oxygen.

Last year Bargiel became the first person to successfully ski down the world's second highest mountain, K2, after several others had abandoned their attempts or died whilst trying to achieve the same feat over the previous decade.
