80 Metre High “Snow Declaration” Written With Skis In Chinese Snow

A huge "Snow Declaration" written "using snowboards and skis as pens" has been created at the Chinese ski resort of Jiangjunshan in the Altay Prefecture of Xinjiang.
The massive "Declaration" is 200 metres long and 80 meters wide. Seen from high above, on the right is a giant Chinese character meaning "good," with two smaller Chinese characters next to it, forming a phrase meaning "have faith in." On the left is an image of a Chinese girl in traditional Chinese cheongsam.

Immigrant Employees Win $1m Settlement in Case At Billionaires’ Ski Resort

Around 90 former employees at the private Yellowstone Club ski resort in Montana have received payments which altogether amount to $1m dollars in an out of court settlement.
The payments relate to a legal case brought in 2019 by the workers at the ski resort, all of whom are believed to be of Jamaican nationality. The case alleges that whilst most Yellowstone Club employees had cash tips from the ultra-rich Club members and their guests passed on to them, the Jamaican employees did not get anything.

A Dozen US Ski Areas Extend Seasons into May

Around a dozen ski areas in seven states in the US have announced they'll be offering skiing and snowboarding in May, about half-of-them every day of the month.
The centres have extended their seasons despite pandemic restrictions, although these are easing in many areas.

Austrian Ski Resorts Report Loss Of “More Than A Billion Euros” During Pandemic Ski Season

The boss of Austria's ski lift operators association, the APA, has said that the decision to stop overnight stays at ski centres this winter has resulted in combined losses of over €1 billion by the country's ski areas.
Franz Hoerl, chairman of the APA, said business overall was down by 90%, with larger resorts that relied on international visitors hardest hit.

Austrian Glacier Ski Centre Extends Season Into July

The Austrian glacier ski area of Kitzsteinhorn (pictured below) has announced it will stay open until the 24th of July. It credits the Austrian government announcement that lockdown restrictions will (hopefully) be eased and tourism allowed to resume from mid-May. It had previously said its season would end on May 25th. The centre, above Kaprun in Salzburgerland, currently has a 3.3 metre (11 feet) base and 20km of slopes open.

US Ski Resort With No Name To Be Rebuilt

The Finance Authority of the US state of Maine has approved up to $135 million in financing for a non-profit developer to acquire and redevelop the former Big Squaw ski resort into a four-season destination.
The Provident Resources Group plan to add a chairlift, surface lifts, snowmaking, zip wires, marina, observatory, a conference centre, hotel and pub-restaurant in the yet-to-be-renamed resort.

Steamboat Ski Area to Jump Up to 5th Biggest in US With Terrain Expansion

Steamboat ski area will expand its ski area by around 20% next winter, assuming a planned expansion receives the approvals needed in time.
The additional 650 acres of advanced/expert skiable terrain in the resort's Pioneer Ridge area will expand its total terrain by nearly 20 percent for a total of 3,620 acres.

Police Officer Suspended for Snowboarding Whilst On Duty

A senior police officer in Japan has been suspended from work for three months for snowboarding whilst on duty.
The 57 year old former station chief in Japan's Akita Prefecture after being found to have gone snowboarding at Mount Moriyoshi Ani Ski Resort in the city of Kitaakita during his working hours, according to a report in the country's Mainichi newspaper.

Huge New Ski Resort Proposed for Western Canada

The latest in a number of giant ski resort proposals for a part of the Canadian wilderness has been put forward.
The proposed Bridal Veil Mountain Resort would be located above the Trans-Canada Highway near Chilliwack.
Covering a proposed 11,500 acres of terrain, it would have a footprint about a third larger than North America's current biggest at Whistler Blackcomb. However initial reports suggest the skiable vertical would be much more modest at only around 700 metres.

Gondola Link To create “North America’s Third Largest Ski Area”

A long-planned gondola connection between two Californian ski areas will create a 6,000 acres ski resort, the third biggest in North America.
Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have operated under joint ownership and been treated as a single-entity for nearly a decades and the plan to connect the two ski areas by a gondola goes back much further still.

Big Pre-Season Snowfall in Australia

Australia's ski areas are in to their second day of a major early-autumn snow storm.
A southerly weather front has brought up to 23cm (nine inches) of snowfall so far to virtually all of the country's ski areas. The snow is still falling.

French Ski Areas Announce 2021 Summer Ski Dates

French ski resorts were not permitted to run their ski lifts all winter, but they are hoping that they will be able to offer summer skiing.
Although closed from early March at the end of winter 19-20 by the first lockdown, and then throughout the past ski season, France's ski resorts were open last summer and in some cases reported record business.

Orelle gondola bubbles sold for €500 each

[b]All 51 cabins from the old Orelle '3 Vallées Express' lift have been sold in less than a day.
The cabins will be replaced by a new gondola, built by Doppelmayr. The new lift will connect Orelle to the Cime Caron at 3195m in Val Thorens thanks to a second section.

New Zealand Introduces ‘Travel Bubble’ with Australia Ahead of 2021 Ski Season

New Zealand is to allow travellers from Australia to arrive without needing to quarantine.
The initiative, first discussed almost a year ago, is seen as a big boost for the country's ski areas, some of which rely heavily on international skier visits, particularly from Australia.

Dramatic Drop in Open Ski Areas in Europe Post Easter

The number of ski areas open in Europe, particularly the Alps, has dropped dramatically following the Easter weekend.
It is normal for the season to end at 99% of the northern hemisphere's 5,000 or so ski areas between late march and early May, but this year appears to have seen around 90% of ski areas decide the end of Easter Sunday, or Monday the 5th would end their season, if they had not closed already.

Audi Nines come to Crans Montana

Crans Montana will host the event, which will be more modest than in previous years, with fewer riders.

Work Progressing on First 8 Seater Chairlift for New Zealand

Work is reported to be progressing well on the first eight-seater chairlift to be set up in New Zealand.
The new Nor'west Express which the resort hopes will be ready for the start of the season at the beginning of June is set to transform access to the mountain.

It's unclear if the announcement is an April Fool or not – it was published on social media early on April 2nd, giving the impression it is not.

“Coffee Table Sized” Ski Guidebook Wins Award

A "coffee table book" is a term often used in publishing to describe a large, glossy, high-quality, illustration-rich book, but a new ski guide has been described as actually being "a book the size of a coffee table" by an awards committee.
The 616-page book 'Skiing Around the World Volume II' by Jimmy Petterson weighs in at 3.6 kilos. It has won this year's Baldur Award, presented for an outstanding work of general interest that sheds significant light on an aspect of skiing history by The International Skiing History Association (ISHA).
