Major upgrades at Narvikfjellet, the Arctic‑coast ski area in northern Norway, are moving toward completion for the 2026–27 season as the resort prepares to host the 2029 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. The €53 million (approx. NOK 720 million) investment covers a full modernisation of lifts, slopes, race infrastructure and snowmaking, forming one of Scandinavia's largest ski‑area redevelopment projects.
Construction remains broadly on schedule, with all major components expected to be finished by March 2027. The lift programme includes a new 10‑seat gondola, a new 6‑seat chairlift, and three T‑bars. The Linken Express six‑seater was completed earlier this year, while the new Nordlysheisen upper T‑bar is progressing as planned. Work continues on the gondola and the remaining T‑bars (Lift 1 and Lift 2).
A centrepiece of the redevelopment is the 3 km Panorama Downhill Course, designed specifically for World Cup‑level racing in 2029. Additional public terrain is being added, including a new family zone at 656 m and a 2.9 km intermediate run with a 15% average gradient and a 25–30 m width. Resort representatives say the new terrain will become a signature feature for visitors.
Snowmaking capacity is being significantly expanded. Narvik is installing a new reservoir, pump station, booster station and a fully renewed pipeline network, supported by 100 new snow guns and 12 groomers. A new electrical substation will stabilise power for lifts, lighting and snow production. Further plans include a redesigned finish zone, upgraded spectator facilities and a commercial hub at the gondola base.
Narvik previously hosted the FIS Alpine Junior World Championships in 2020 and again in March 2026. The resort is known for its dramatic sea‑view descents and proximity to Sweden's Riksgränsen, with which it shares a cross‑border ski pass during their overlapping spring seasons.
